'The Dark ' was published in 1980. It appeared to me that this was the first really scary book James Herbert had written. I think we all at some time have been afraid of the dark and suddenly we have someone preying on our nightmares........ that thing under the bed that you don't see during the day is suddenly in your face and its dark!!!

The storyline is one of good versus evil. That in itself, however is not apparent until the end. A mystical society somehow conjure up an evil 'force' and it is a race against time to see 'good' triumph.

The darkness feeds on peoples fears and encourages them to succumb to madness. It encourages them to act out their most primitive fantasies and encourages them to gather at the mysterious house called Beechwood.

This is an excellent adventure with a magnificent ending. Well worth a look.!!

A comparisism may be drawn with 'The Fog' if you're that way inclined but the stories are vastly different. No comparism can be made to my mind.
