James Herbert has written 20 books to date- 17 novels, 1 'graphic' novel and 2 non-fiction.

We will start our journey where he started his..................

The Rats was the first novel and was first published back in 1974. It was a story about (clues in the title)........ rats!! Set in London it is a story of how a race of mutated rats colonized and began preying on initially small animals and then building an appetite for humans.

Of course we were lucky enough to have someone to save us all who as well as being our hero also doubled up as a teacher.

This story was my first taste of horror and I was at quite an impressionable age and leave an impression it did!! James Herberts writing is very graphic and you don't need to use much imagination as its all there for you in black and white.

The Rats was the first of a trilogy. Following on was 'Lair' and 'Domain'.

'Lair' was first published in 1979 and the setting is 4 years on from the outbreak of rats seen in the first novel. The rats have been forced to flee the city and are now in Epping Forest.

Luckily this time our intrepid hero is a 'rat catcher' by trade so we know we're in good hands!! Again a very graphic story with the scene being quickly set and how our hero saves us all once again from the nasty creatures. Out of the trilogy this is my personal favourite.

'Domain' followed 'Lair' and was first published in 1984. It follows the story of the rats as they move back into London following a nuclear attack where their prey are seriously weakened.

Again, I preferred its predecessor but that 's just my choice.
